The text on the illustration reads: Raymond Chandler before the Hollywood Public Library where Philip Marlowe consults the famous original editions before going to the pornographer Arthur Geiger in “The Big Sleep”.

This is an illustration by French artist Jean-Claude Clayes for a Patricia Highsmith article entitled “Chandler for ever”, published in the October 1984 issue of Le Magazine Littéraire.
